Eastern Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)

Reported By:
Justin Gosnell
Time:
April 2nd, 2017 - 08:30 PM
State:
South Carolina
County:
Sumter
Age:
Adult
Sex:
Multiple Specimens
Method:
Road Cruising

Notes

I found these two copperheads crossing the same dirt road within 5 minutes of each other. They were heading in opposite directions. I also found a roadkill copperhead that morning on the same stretch of that road. I believe these snakes were migrating from their hibernation sites to their spring/summer hunting areas. The contrast between the colorations of these two individuals was impressive. However, the second specimen could have been about to molt. I have noticed that there seems to be more darker, spotted copperheads in the Coastal Plain region of SC in the past decade. Are the Northern and Southern copperheads no longer considered separate subspecies?
