Notes

A courting pair of Five-Lined Skinks observed on the back of my parents' house in Altavista, Virginia. I was helping paint a trellis when the female emerged onto the brick to bask. A few minutes later, the male appeared. Then they retreated underneath the deck and were spotted on top of an exhaust vent, where the male proceeded to bite the female on the neck. No actual mating was observed. The female already appeared to be pregnant. A few minutes later, they both came back out into the sun and appeared calm while I watched them up close. Before too long, though, they scurried into a crack between the brick and the basement door.
