Notes

Found my first American Alligator (outside of Florida where you practically trip over them) at Merchants Millpond State Park in Gates Co. North Carolina while kayaking the pond with my wife. We intentionally went down there from Virginia Beach with the specific purpose of seeing one, but still felt rather lucky based on what the rangers had been telling us in previous visits. We spent about 1/2 hour paddling around withe gator before finally letting it be at peace. It looked to be between 6-7' long based on the distance between the nares and eyes. Not sure how accurate this is, but it seemed to be a pretty good "guesstimate" based on previous gator sightings in the Everglades.
